Martin
Dear friends,
We have lost the battle. Martin went down quickly after the surgery, with many more symptoms and limitations. He died peacefully at home in the evening on September 10.
It is incredible that such a healthy, strong and beautiful person is gone in only three months. He was very ill the last few weeks, though he found every opportunity he could to seek health and to be happy for each day.

September 2008
The last surgery recovery (i.e. intended resection) is going reasonably well with significantly less pain and discomfort now. The focus now is on a carefully directed chemotherapy protocol to reduce my symptoms, and perhaps the size of the tumor. Otherwise, just struggling to maintain some basic activities of daily living to and between treatments seems to be what it's about.
My warmth and loving to so many of you who have been so caring.

further treatment
We have been enjoying TLC from visiting friends and relations as Martin heals from the surgery. That takes a while; major surgery certainly affects energy and appetite.
Next week we are going to the Mayo Clinic for further evaluation and treatment.
Thanks for the cards, calls and good wishes.

flowers
Thanks for the beautiful flowers and cards.
The arrangement from PDS arrived Friday and is beautiful and complex.
Martin is continuing to rest and improve from the surgery, and has enjoyed a few brief outings. Right now one of his oldest friends is visiting and helping out. We will be deciding on the next steps in treatment in the coming week.

surgery results
Dear friends -
Martin's surgery on Friday did not result in the resection as was planned. It appears other treatment is neccessary and we are seeking the best sequence of options. He is recovering quickly from the exploratory surgery and feeling fairly strong.
He will be returning home to Bellingham on Monday or Tuesday August 11 or 12.

surgery date
Hi -
Presently, Martin is "balancing" rest, pain management, diet, and a little light exercise.
On July 25th, Martin had an irregular lymph node in his neck removed. We are pleased that this proved to be benign, and put him back on track to be scheduled for the liver re-section.
That is now scheduled for this Friday, August 8.
Martin will be in surgery most of the day. He will be held in intensive care for a minimum of two days and will remain in the UW Medical Center for a total of at least 5 or 6 days.
His recovery time at home is likely to be a minimum of six weeks after this Friday. He has a good surgeon and we hope for a full recovery.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
